Prometheus Initiative Aims to build defences against autonomous AI
With growing concerns for autonomous cyber threats posed by powerful AI models, twelve organisations, including Northwave, are committing to help the Netherlands build robust defences. This project, named Prometheus, is a collaborative public-private initiative under the Digital Holland banner focused on accelerating innovation at the intersection of AI and cyber security. Its ambition is to create a collective, market-neutral, and sovereign cyber capability that uses AI to identify, validate, and remediate vulnerabilities in widely-used software faster than attackers can exploit them.
How Northwave is supporting the Prometheus Initiative
For our part, Northwave will share knowledge and experience and develop a Proof of Concept that includes two demonstrators: one for LLM-driven infrastructure diagnostics and one for LLM-driven software diagnostics. These demonstrators will help us understand how LLMs can be used to improve the security of organisations at scale and represent the first step towards a shared cyber capability that can be used more broadly. The collaboration should also provide the necessary data, computing power and advanced AI models, sourced as much as possible domestically or, at the very least, kept under our control.

It also provides attackers with new ways to carry out more cyberattacks, more quickly and with less effort. Over the past year, we have already seen the effects of this in the growing number of software vulnerabilities that are being discovered and exploited. Within our CERT, we have also observed an AI-driven cyberattack bypassing existing detection mechanisms, requiring a different approach to defence. Although this threat is still new to everyone, together we have the knowledge and resources needed to help the Netherlands build defences against it."
